Could the forgotten medicine of touch, energy and self care be the key to healing?

For many of us when we think about medicine it’s all about using medications or seeing a doctor. This is of course important, but it’s not the only way we heal. The focus that Western society has on medications and seeing a doctor for all our health needs, neglects the very innate ability that humans have to use a variety of ways to create healing for ourselves that has nothing to do with using medications. The question I pose in the heading pretty much answers itself. For those who are self aware there are a variety of methods that we use for healing, touch, energy and self care are a key part of the puzzle that is health and healing.

How can ‘touch’ be a key to health and healing?

When I talk about touch and the part it plays in health and healing what I mean is those therapies that support holistic health; mind, body and spirit. Touch can be through a variety of wholistic therapies that support the body to heal itself. It plays a massive role in vibrational frequency as the person who is in the position of therapist or practitioner needs to be aligned with the receiver, so that they know how to best support them through touch. Not always will the receiver need for example a deep tissue massage. Sometimes light and gentle touch will be just what the client needs. It will be focused on their energy and emotions or their physical needs, not the practitioners.

Touch is so significant as it is a space that not all people are privy to. When a client receives a remedial massage and falls asleep on the table I am reminded that this is significant as it shows the receiver feels safe, in a space of comfort and is receiving what their body and mind need at that point in time. The nervous system has become in tune with the muscular skeletal system, so that the body has let go of what it is holding onto in those moments and dropped into a very relaxed and calmative space. Touch is an amazing way to create this space of grounded calm.

When I first began my relaxation massage career I had a client come in whose wife had just had a miscarriage. Understandably he was sad and grieving. He cried through the massage. In this moment touch through a calming relaxation massage was what he needed, not a deep tissue massage, which would be useful and supportive to a client in other circumstances. To feel connected to someone who wasn’t judging him, in a space that was supportive and safe was important at that point. Since then I’ve had many a client express their grief, joy, happiness and pain on the massage table. Massage, whether it relaxation, remedial, raindrop or lymphatic drainage (all the therapies I offer) support the body in many ways. Through touch and my secret ingredient Young Living essential oils (which I believe elevate any massage), I have been able to create a safe and nurturing space that helps to shift physical and emotional energy through touch.

How energy is energy a key to healing?

There is a great anonymous quote that says ‘your energy precedes you’, meaning before you enter a room people can intuitively feel who you are and how you feel at the time. This is your aura or your energy field that can present in many ways depending on how you are feeling, whether you are uplifted or drained, whether you are positive or negative and on the whole how you show up in the world.

Your energy is dependent on what you eat, after all you are what you eat. So eating nutritious healthy food impacts how you present. It is dependent on who you surround yourself with, we after all the sum of the 5 closest people to us, and it is dependent on what we put into our minds. What you watch, read and think about impacts the words and thoughts that you have.

Essentially we have an amazing capacity to change our energy and therefore change how we present to the world. Energy healing is a fabulous way to do this. It can help to shift our energy and enables us to shift our emotional as well as physical vibration (energy). To read more about this modality and how it can help, you can jump over to this previous blog I wrote on how to shift your energy. Healing touch is one of my favourite ways to do this, as well as sound healing which uses energy through sound vibration to create healing. Sound healing is particularly good for relieving stress and creating grounding in the spirit.

How is self care part of healing?

Self care overrides all therapies, as it encompasses them all, as well as much, much more. Self care isn’t simply having your massage, or your lymphatic drainage session, it’s making choices about how you choose to look after yourself on a daily basis. It’s what you put into your body, what you eat, the chemicals you consume, what you say yes and no to, whether you exercise and heaps more. Self care is not selfish, as it is the main part of our health and healing.

Without self care it would be too easy to neglect our own health. Self care brings balance to busy women who juggle all the balls in the air and forget to look after themselves. Your self care will be different to mine. I have 3 kids at home, I’m studying, I own a few businesses… What about you? What’s important to you? This will shape your self care and how you enable healing and health in your life. Please remember how important this is. Without it it’s hard to have any health or healing.

The key to health and healing

Health and healing is way more than simply what medications we use when we are unwell. It’s way more than a visit to our doctor when we have an illness. Healing encompasses facets that are wholistic, that is they bring whole body healing. Touch, energy and self care are a large part of this self healing. When we fail to add these aspects to our lives we do not allow for how amazing we can feel. Self healing through touch, energy and self care enables us to experience the richness of life as human beings who are attune to our own needs mind, body and spirit. It allows us to create grounding in our lives and it ensures we are people who are wise, well and whole as we experience this adventure that is life.

What about you? Are you experiencing the fullness of life? If you are feeling you need a bit of an energy boost, or perhaps a physical tune up? Or maybe self care is a concern at the moment.
