Essential oils and your energy: How scents shift your mood, mind and vibration

When I first got into oils (many moons ago :)) I tried an oil called Abundance. I absolutely hated the scent. It irritated my senses and I could not stand it, so I swapped it for a bottle of Ylang Ylang. At the time I learned that scents our bodies need are often those that we repel. Ironically, Abundance was something that I repelled. Perhaps I felt that I did not deserve to have those things I desired. I’m not quite sure, but definitely I did not sit comfortably with abundance. We know that essential oils are so much more than simply their nice scents and that they impact the body on a physical, emotional, and energetic level, by influencing everything from stress and mood to focus, sleep, and overall wellbeing.

… And so eight years later after doing much work on myself and my emotions I picked up a bottle of Abundance and I was in love. It was one of the main oils we used at one of our day retreats and I found the aroma to be deep, alluring, grounding and just beautiful. Our bodies will repel and attract different scents depending on the vibration or energy they are in.

Understanding how essential oils affect our energy helps us use them with more intention and deeper awareness.

Scent Is a Direct Pathway to the Brain🌸

When you inhale an essential oil, aromatic molecules travel through the nose to the olfactory system, this has a connection to the limbic system — the part of the brain linked to:

  • Emotions
  • Memory
  • Stress response
  • Hormone regulation

Oils therefore impact how we are feeling – be it calm, uplifting, or to simply bring back memories. They can help shift the nervous system, moving us out of fight-or-flight and into rest-and-restore.

And when the nervous system relaxes, our energy or vibration naturally becomes more balanced and clear.

🌿 Essential Oils Impact Emotional Energy

Our emotional state is deeply tied to our energetic state. Those feelings such as stress, fear, or overwhelm can leave us feeling low, heavy, drained, or scatty. Uplifting or grounding oils can gently support emotional release and energetic balance.

For example:

  • Lavender → calming, soothing, supports emotional release
  • Orange → uplifting, helps ease heaviness and low mood
  • Frankincense → grounding, centering, supports inner stillness
  • Peppermint → energising, clears mental fog

These effects are not just  in our mindl — they involve real shifts in nervous system activity, breathing patterns, and muscle tension, all of which influence how our energy flows through the body.

Plants Carry Their Own Energetic Signature✨

Plants grow in relationship with sunlight, soil, water, and nature. When we use essential oils, we are working with the concentrated life force of the plant.

Many traditional healing systems view plants as having a unique energy:

  • Some are grounding (woody oils like cedarwood, sandalwood)
  • Some are uplifting (citrus oils are the oils of happiness!!)
  • Some are clarifying (eucalyptus, rosemary)
  • Some are heartfelt (rose, geranium)

When chosen intentionally, oils can support the areas where we feel emotionally or energetically “stuck” and which need shifting.

Essential Oils and the Energy Body🌬

From an energetic perspective, stress and unresolved emotions can create tension in the body. You might notice the effects of this through:

  • Tight sore shoulders
  • Shallow breathing
  • A heaviness in the chest
  • Brain fog

I had a really sore back for many years, holding onto the frustration and annoyance I felt when someone told me off (or that’s how it felt) in a place I was working. Interestingly when I left that place of work the pain I carried disappeared. Knowing what I know about oils I should have remembered that applying essential oils with intention could have helped me to move on from this feeling, rather than holding onto it. Applying oils (such as massage, self-massage, or over pulse points) combines aromatherapy with the healing power of touch, helping the body feel safe enough to release stored tension. As the body softens, energy can move more freely.

This is one reason essential oils work beautifully in massage, bodywork, and relaxation practices. Raindrop technique is one of the most amazing ways that oils can be added into a massage, as it works physically, emtionally and energetically – basically it supports the whole person.

🌼 Using Essential Oils Intentionally

Rather than using oils randomly, try choosing them based on how you would like to feel:

If you feel…Try oils that are…Examples
Stressed & overwhelmedCalming & groundingLavender, vetiver, frankincense
Flat or lowUplifting & brightOrange, lemon, bergamot
Foggy or tiredStimulating & clarifyingPeppermint, rosemary
Emotionally heavyHeart-supportiveGeranium, rose, ylang ylang

Breathe slowly, set your intention, allow the scent to help shifts  — physically, emotionally, and energetically.

🌿 And so…

Essential oils are not just fragrances or pretty aromas. They are a link between:

Body → Mind → Emotions → Energy

By influencing the nervous system, emotional state, and subtle energetic field, essential oils can help us feel more grounded, uplifted, clear, and balanced. When used with awareness, they powerfully support overall wellbeing — not by forcing change, but by gently guiding the body and energy back into harmony.
